ABOUT THE PROGRAM
In America there are close to 50,000,000 people with various physical, mental and/or developmental disabilities. People who are no different than anyone else when it comes to wanting to exercise their right to vote. Yet historically, the voting rate of people with disabilities is significantly lower than that of non-disabled citizens. We wanted to know why that is, and, more importantly, to help recover those lost votes.
At Voting Matters we believe that one of the reasons may well be that many poll workers do not know how to best serve the needs of voters with disabilities. They may, quite naturally, feel awkward and unsure of what to do or say. And when they feel uncomfortable, that discomfort is transferred to the voter. And when a voter has an unpleasant experience in a polling place, one that he feels is demeaning or embarrassing, that experience can create an unwillingness to repeat it again by returning to vote.
It is out of this belief that we created the “Help America Vote – Sensitivity to Voters With Disabilities training program for poll workers. Originally commissioned by the State of Florida for the use of every county within the State
, the program met with rave reviews. It is now available for the rest of the Country in time for the all important 2006 elections.
